Getting Around On Vacation
Date Posted: 06/21/2013
Summer is upon us and vacation plans are underway. Logistics are a large part of making your vacation dreams become a reality. How do you get to the airport? Are you familiar with the city or airport? How will you get to the hotel, venue or resort? How are you going to get around town? Do you know where you are going? Is it safe? So many questions and you haven’t left the comfort of your home.
Depending on your destination, using a bus line may work well. It is probably the lowest cost means of transport. For me it is the time it takes verses the cost as well as how many times I must change bus lines to reach the destination. How difficult is the schedule? And will I arrive in time to make the event, show or meet point?
A taxi is a good solution for short trips or for getting around town. Cities will have taxis readily available in downtown locations or the airport. In outlying areas it may take some time for a taxi to reach you. It will cost more than a bus, but will be a direct route.
Rail systems can be very good around large cities, but usually don’t run to outlying areas unless they are on route to another major city. So, do I take a train to the closest point and then jump on a bus or take a taxi? It can get complicated if you are not familiar with the route.
Do they drive on the same side of the roadway? Are the same traffic laws applicable? Do I have an idea of where I am and can I navigate the area? I recently visited a place where they drove on the left side of the road, the opposite of what I am use to. It took days for me to process “look right when stepping off the curb”. After about a week, my brain began to reprogram and will probably attempt to drive the next time I encounter driving on the left side of the street.
Sedan / Car Service
A chauffeured car service is generally the most efficient, worry free way to get around especially in a foreign place. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a chauffeur who knows the area, waiting for you and your family at baggage claim ready to transport you to your hotel or resort?
Recently, we flew overnight and had a lunch meeting scheduled. We had no idea where we were or how to get to the hotel. We hired a chauffeur who met us outside customs, took us to our hotel, waited while we freshened up and he dropped us at our meeting somewhat refreshed. After being up for 24 hours, I don’t think we would have made the meeting if we had not hired a sedan service.
The mode of transportation you choose is a personal one and types may be limited depending upon the location. There is a place for each of the above methods depending upon the situation, budget and time-frame. Whichever mode you choose, enjoy your vacation and take time to refresh and recharge your batteries.
