Washington DC Cherry Blossoms

History and Significance

This year marks the 103rd anniversary of the gift of the cherry blossom trees from Japan as a symbol of friendship with the United States. In 1912, the people of Japan sent 3,020 cherry trees to the United States as a gift of friendship. First Lady Taft and the Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese Ambassador, planted the first two cherry trees on the northern bank of the Tidal Basin. In Japan the flowering cherry tree or “Sakura” is an exalted flowing plant. The beauty of the cherry blossom is a potent symbol equated with the evanescence of human life and epitomizes the transformation of Japanese culture throughout the ages.
